German Assessment Questions Legality of US-Israeli Strikes on Iran

(MENAFN) A legal assessment prepared for Germany’s parliament has concluded that the military campaign carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran likely breaches international law, while also cautioning that Germany could face legal consequences, as stated by reports.

The study, commissioned by the opposition party The Left, argues that the strikes fall outside the boundaries set by the UN Charter. It states that, “according to prevailing opinion,” the actions violate the ban on the use of force, as they are neither carried out in self-defense nor approved by the UN Security Council.

In the 12-page review, legal specialists explored whether the involvement of US military installations in Germany—such as Ramstein Air Base—in operations targeting Iran might expose Germany to legal accountability under international law.

Their findings suggest that such responsibility “cannot be ruled out, depending on the specific circumstances,” according to.

The analysis further notes that even indirect participation could raise legal concerns, particularly if German-based facilities are used in a way that contributes to the use of force. It emphasizes that these bases, while used by the US, remain located on German territory rather than constituting sovereign American land.

Additionally, the experts referenced a previous parliamentary review related to Russia’s war in Ukraine, which concluded that simply allowing territory—such as Belarus—to be used for offensive military operations could be interpreted as aiding and abetting under international law.
